Understanding Freemasonry

Our Structure, Meetings, Publication

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest fraternal and charitable organizations.  Our organization allows many men to connect with others who are doing charitable work and deeds within local communities.  Our members come from all walks of life and meet as equals, regardless of their race, religion, age or socio-economic position in life. The values of Freemasonry are based on faith, hope, and charity.

Below is a video developed by the Grand Lodge of Maryland to provide a description of Freemasonry as a way to better understand the institution overall.  Our embedding it on our website does not imply endorsement, partnership, nor connection with the Grand Lodge of Maryland; it is being used for educational display only.

"...a beautiful system of morality, veiled in allegories, and illustrated by signs and symbols!"

The Most Worshipful George Mathews Supreme Grand Lodge (MWGMSGL) is the governing body of Freemasonry within International Masons. Its headquarters are at 2101 Gratiot Avenue, Detroit, Michigan 48207.

MWGMSGL meets annually at the Supreme Convention in July.  At this convention, members receive reports on prior year's activities, Masonic education, and fraternal interaction.  Each Officer is available for reference and guidance to those serving in National District and Grand Lodge offices throughout the year.

The Most Worshipful George Mathews Supreme Grand Lodge currently has thousands of members meeting in approximately 500 Lodges throughout the United States and Caribbean.  Each local lodge is subordinate to their state's Grand Lodge, which is governed by a Grand Master and cabinet of officers.

For the purpose of ensuring accountability and to prevent any disharmony within states, National Districts were created to allow states within specific geographic regions of the country to meet annually for the purpose of education, information exchange, and fellowship.  These National District Grand Lodges are governed by National District Grand Masters who are appointed by the Supreme President at the Supreme Convention every two years.

The Most Worshipful George Mathews Supreme Grand Lodge publishes "The Voice of Masters Among Men" bi-monthly which provides essential news regarding upcoming conventions, special meetings, edicts issued by the Supreme President, and other useful information and instruction needed by Masons.  It provides a list of all Supreme Grand Lodge officers and committees. It also provides a study topic for Masons to focus on throughout the year leading up to the Supreme Convention.
